It was good to see both new and returning members. We discussed Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. I am happy to say that everyone really enjoyed the book despite the fact that many book clubbers don't typically read historical fiction. The novel is about teenager Mattie Cook's attempts to survive the yellow fever epidemic that hit Philadelphia in 1793, killing nearly 10% of the population. Book club members said that Mattie's story felt very real, which shows that the author put a lot of time into researching the fever epidemic to capture not only the panic that many people experienced but also the bravery of the volunteers who risked their lives to aid the sick.

Next month we will be discussing Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry, author of The Giver. Gathering Blue is set in a primitive society without modern technology. Everyone must fend for themselves. When Kira becomes orphaned and physically disabled, she is taken to live at the palatial Council Edifice. Here, she must use her talent as a weaver to help the powerful Guardians who rule the village. Kira must decide whether to try to leave and find freedom, or stay and try to change the way things are. If you weren't at last night's meeting, come to the Children and Young Adult information desk to pick up a copy of the book.

For Hunger Games fans, if you haven't seen the trailer, you should definitely check it out. We also have a booklist called "If You Liked the Hunger Games" featuring books that will appeal to fans of the series, including Unwound by Neal Shusterman, which was mentioned last night. The list is available in print in the Young Adult section of the library, or on our website here.

Finally, here are a few of the new books recently added to our Young Adult collection:

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Evie considers herself a normal teenager. But most teenagers don't work for the International Paranormal Containment Agency. When Dylan's Scout troop goes camping on a remote Hawaiian island, he's less than excited about spending time with bully Louie Domingo. But when an earthquake hits, followed by a tsunami, Dylan and Louie must learn to work together in order to survive. Book club members felt the novel could have used more character development. Several characters are introduced early on in the book, but not much information is given about their backgrounds. We also discussed Dylan's and Louie's leadership skills and how their relationship changes at the end of the book.

We will be starting a new book club session in January. If you haven't signed up, you can do so at the Children and Young Adult information desk on the second floor of the library. Our first meeting will be January 12 at 7:00 p.m. We will be reading Fever, 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. This historical novel tells the story of a teenager named Mattie who must flee her home after an outbreak of yellow fever. Can she stay alive?

Looking forward to seeing everyone in January!

New Titles @ APL

If you need something new to read, check out these new titles @ APL:

Ashes by Ilsa J. Would love be strong enough to survive the fight? Either way, there’s no turning back.

The Empyrean is the only home 15-year-old Waverly has ever known. Part of the first generation to be successfully conceived in deep space, she and her boyfriend Kieran will be pioneers of New Earth. Waverly knows she must marry young in order to have children who can carry on the mission, and Kieran, the handsome captain-to-be, has everything Waverly could want in a husband. Everyone is sure he’s the best choice. Still, there’s a part of Waverly that wants more from life than marriage, and she is secretly intrigued by the shy, darkly brilliant Seth.

Suddenly, Waverly’s dreams are interrupted by the inconceivable – a violent betrayal by the Empyrean's sister ship, the New Horizon. The New Horizon’s leaders are desperate to populate the new planet first, and will do anything to get what they need: young girls. In one pivotal moment, Waverly and Kieran are separated, and find themselves at the helm of dangerous missions, where every move has potentially devastating consequences, and decisions of the heart may lead to disaster.

Pulse-pounding and addictive, GLOW begins the most riveting series since The Hunger Games.

Kill All Enemies by Melvin Burgess

From Goodreads.com:

Everyone says fourteen-year-old Billie is nothing but trouble. A fighter. A danger to her family and friends. But her care worker sees someone different. Her classmate Rob is big, strong; he can take care of himself and his brother. But his violent stepdad sees someone to humiliate. And Chris is struggling at school; he just doesn't want to be there. But his dad sees a useless no-hoper. Billie, Rob and Chris each have a story to tell. But there are two sides to every story, and the question is ...who do you believe?

The Fifth Rule by Don Aker

From Goodreads.com:

Reef has been living in Calgary for the past year but now he's back in Halifax for the funeral of Frank Colville - his former mentor. Memories of Frank compete with memories of Leeza and the terrible way their relationship ended. Mindful that the restraining order against him has been renewed by Leeza's mother, Reef has no intention of staying in Halifax for long.

Leeza, in the meantime, is feeling stifled by her mother's concern. A first-year university student at Dalhousie, she is kicking herself for not attending university out of town.

Despite Reef's best efforts to stay away, circumstances quickly unfold to push him and Leeza ever closer to each other. An eager political crusader wants to close Reef's former group home and he will stop at nothing to get media attention including manipulating news items -- Reef is shocked to discover that he has been photographed outside Leeza's house and is therefore in violation of the restraining order. Finding himself at the centre of growing controversy Reef is pushed to his limits.

Before he leaves town Reef must face his demons and make some tough choices or else risk losing everything he has ever worked for including the only girl he has ever loved

Dragon's Oath by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast

From Goodreads.com:

In early 19th century England, long before he’s a professor at the Tulsa House of Night, Bryan Lankford is a troublesome yet talented human teen who thinks he can get away with anything…until his father, a wealthy nobleman, has finally had enough, and banishes him to America. When Bryan is Marked on the docks and given the choice between the London House of Night and the dragon-prowed ship to America, he chooses the Dragon – and a brand new fate.

Becoming a Fledgling may be exciting, but it opens a door to a dangerous world.... In 1830’s St. Louis, the Gateway to the West, Dragon Lankford becomes a Sword Master, and soon realizes there are both frightening challenges and beautiful perks. Like Anastasia, the captivating young Professor of Spells and Rituals at the Tower Grove House of Night, who really should have nothing to do with a fledgling…

But when a dark power threatens, Dragon is caught in its focus. Though his uncanny fighting skills make him a powerful fledgling, is he strong enough to ward off evil, while protecting Anastasia as well? Will his choices save her—or destroy them all?

Chance to Dance for You by Gail Sidonie Sobat

From Amazon.ca:

Sometimes keeping a secret is harder than telling the truth. Ian lives in a suburb where everything’s the same. The houses are the same, the cars are the same, and their aspirations are the same. But Ian is different. Openly gay in his bigoted high school, Ian doesn’t exactly fit in. But he’s not worried - he’s been training in dance for a long time and soon he’ll be able to leave town and train to become a professional. We discussed the book Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen. Flipped is told from the perspectives of the two main characters, Juli and Bryce. This gave us the chance to see both sides of the story and made it easier to understand where the characters were coming from. We also discussed open vs. closed endings. Some Book Club'ers prefer a happy ending where the conflicts in the story are resolved, while others prefer books that are more open-ended because this gives us a chance to imagine what happened after the book ends.

Next month, we'll be reading Night of the Howling Dogs by Grahan Salisbury. In this exciting adventure novel, Dylan's camping trip to Hawaii with his Scout troop is turned upside-down when both an earthquake and a tsunami hit the area. The book is based on a true story and is sure to keep readers captivated.

The next book club meeting is Thursday, December 8. At the December meeting, you'll be able to sign up for our winter session, which starts January 12, 2012. See you in December!

And We're Off

Hi All!

What a fun first meeting! It was great to meet all of you and see what you like to read. Just to recap, this month we are reading Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen (which was also made into a feature film). I love this book and I hope will enjoy it too!

We also discussed asking Rick Riordan some questions about his popular book series. I have some bad news - he does not accept questions via e-mail, facebook or twitter. But, check out his FAQs for answers to some of your questions.

For you horror fans, here are some suggestions:

Bloodline by Kate Cary

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lisa McBride

Gentlemen by Michael Northrop

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey

First Meeting on October 13th

Hi All!

It's that time again. The consensus is that it was a pretty creepy horror book that left everyone with questions. At the end of the night, we wrote questions to the author and I am working on getting them sent to him. If we're lucky we'll get a reply and learn more about the writing of The Prince of Mist, as well as Ruiz-Zafon's life and career in general.

If you enjoyed the book and are looking for some read-alikes, you may want to try:

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Pretty much anything by Stephen King (if you're brave enough!)

The City of Bones (or any Cassandra Clare title)

Anything by Darren Shan

Looking forward to seeing you at the next meeting, and stay tuned to the blog for answers to the questions posed to Carlos Ruiz-Zafon!

Come in to the library to pick-up the February pick for Book Club if you haven't already got it!

--Sydnie

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://aplyabookclub.blogspot.com/2011/01/january-discussion-and-more.html' title='January Discussion... We had a great turnout, an excellent discussion and best of all, a very special guest appearance (via Skype) from Sylvia McNicoll, the author of our book for March Last Chance for Paris.

This was the first time we've had the opportunity to chat with an author about their book and I was thrilled that we were able to speak with Sylvia for such a long time and about such varied topics as Last Chance for Paris, dogs, travel, writing, getting published and reading interests in general.

This was also the first time that everyone actually liked the book! From our discussion, I'd say what we liked is that the characters were realistic and likeable, and also that there was so much going on in the plot: action, adventure, family relationships, mystery, romance, suspense, teen angst, and of course Paris the wolf/dog. Everyone in our book club seems to love dogs (but NOT chihuahuas)!!

It was also very interesting to learn that Last Chance for Paris is the first book of a series (which has unfortunately only been published in Norwegian and Swedish). Luckily Sylvia was kind enough to let us know some of what happens in the rest of the series. Still, it would be nice if the rest of the series were published in English so we could read the books for ourselves.

We're also looking forward to Sylvia's next book Dying To Go Viral, which even includes some elements of fantasy and is sure to be popular with our book club members.

For more information about Sylvia McNicoll and her books, check out her website at: http://www.sylviamcnicoll.com/index.html

Sylvia also has a blog and this particlar entry will be of interest to you because she mentions us! Check it out:
http://sylviamcnicoll.blogspot.com/2010/03/writer-talks-on-voice-without-one.html

Anyway, I had a great time and I hope you all did too!
I won't be able to attend the next book club meeting, but someone who LOVES this month's book will be there to see what you guys thought of it.

Have fun and happy reading,

Jennifer

Hey everyone,

Thanks to those of you who made it out to the last meeting.
